What a Hydrocolloid Dressing Does

A hydrocolloid dressing is a moist wound-healing product built from three functional layers: an absorbent hydrocolloid matrix, a flexible backing film and a release liner. When the matrix contacts wound exudate, the gelling agents swell and form a soft gel that keeps the wound bed moist while the backing seals the site against water, bacteria and friction.

This mechanism makes hydrocolloid dressings suitable for low-to-moderate exudate wounds such as pressure ulcers, leg ulcers, superficial burns, donor sites, post-operative incisions and blisters. They are not intended for heavily infected or high-exudate wounds, where foam, alginate or NPWT formats are more appropriate.

Materials and Construction

We build each dressing from a defined material stack so that absorption, adhesion and conformability stay consistent from batch to batch. The matrix typically combines sodium carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin and pectin with a polyisobutylene adhesive base; the backing is a flexible polyurethane film; and the liner is a silicone-coated release paper or film.

• Absorbent matrix: gel-forming particles dispersed in an adhesive base, controlling exudate uptake and gel integrity.
• Backing film: waterproof, bacteria-proof and oxygen-permeable, keeping the dressing in place during washing and movement.
• Release liner: silicone-coated for clean peel without distorting the matrix.
