Medical Tape Backing Manufacturers

    information to be updated

In the production of medical tapes and jumbo rolls, the backing material determines the tape's physical properties—such as breathability, strength, flexibility, and water resistance.
Based on clinical application, the primary types of medical tape backing materials can be categorized into the following four major groups:
1. Non-woven Materials — Most versatile
2. Plastic Films — For water resistance and visual monitoring(PE, PU, PVC)

News
Medical Tape Backing Industry knowledge

Suzhou Advan Medical Technology Co., Ltd. is a China-based medical tape backing manufacturer supplying jumbo raw material rolls to tape converters, wound dressing producers, first-aid brands and medical distributors. Our backing range covers non-woven, plastic film, fabric and foam formats, supplied as master rolls for coating, slitting, laminating and die-cutting.

Since 2003 we have produced medical consumables across wound dressing, medical tape, bandages and first-aid categories, exporting to more than 60 countries. The backing materials on the category are the substrate layer that determines breathability, tensile strength, conformability and water resistance in the finished tape.

What We Supply as a Medical Tape Backing Manufacturer

We produce and convert backing substrates in jumbo roll form so that downstream coating, adhesive lamination and slitting stay inside your own process. Rolls are supplied with controlled width, core diameter, winding tension and splice frequency, which keeps coating lines running without web breaks or thickness drift.

Our wholesale Medical Tape Backing manufacturers range sits inside the wider Jumbo Raw Material Roll programme, alongside adhesive systems and release liners so a complete tape construction can be sourced from one supplier.

Backing Material Groups and Application Fit

The backing choice is driven by the clinical or industrial function of the finished tape. Four material families cover the majority of medical tape constructions, and each one behaves differently on the skin, on the coating line and during sterilization.

Backing Group Typical Materials Functional Strength Typical Finished Tape
Non-woven Spunlace, spunbond, viscose blends Breathability, soft hand, tear by hand Non-woven medical tape, fixation tape
Plastic film PE, PU, PVC Water resistance, transparency, thin profile PE medical tape, transparent dressing film
Fabric / cloth Cotton, silk, woven blends High tensile strength, clean tear Silk medical tape, cotton medical tape
Foam PE foam, PU foam Cushioning, sealing, pressure redistribution Foam wound dressing, silicone foam dressing

Non-woven backing

The most versatile option for general fixation. Spunlace and spunbond structures accept acrylic and hot-melt adhesives well, conform to curved anatomy and allow moisture vapour transmission. They are the standard choice for Non-woven Medical Tape and for dressings that need to stay on moving joints.

Plastic film backing

PE, PU and PVC films give a waterproof, low-profile tape that can be monitored through visually. PE is the economical choice for high-volume converting; PU offers higher moisture vapour transmission for longer wear. These films feed directly into PE Medical Tape and transparent dressing lines.

Fabric and cloth backing

Woven cotton and silk backings deliver the highest tensile strength in the range and tear cleanly across the roll width. They suit heavy-duty fixation, zinc oxide plasters and applications where the tape must not stretch under load.

Foam backing

PE and PU foams provide cushioning and a sealing edge for wound contact layers. Foam-backed constructions are used in Foam Wound Dressing and silicone foam formats where pressure redistribution matters.

Specifications We Confirm Before Production

Backing supply is specified as a set of measurable parameters rather than a material name alone. We confirm the following points against your coating line and finished-tape target before a jumbo roll is scheduled.

  • Substrate and grade: material family, fibre or polymer type, and whether a specific hand feel or drape is required.
  • Basis weight and thickness: grammage for non-woven and foam, micron range for films, matched to adhesive coat weight.
  • Roll dimensions: web width, roll diameter, core inner diameter and winding direction.
  • Tensile and elongation: machine-direction and cross-direction values that set the slitting and die-cutting window.
  • Surface treatment: corona or primer treatment where adhesive anchorage needs to be raised.
  • Release and liner pairing: compatibility with the release paper or film used on the reverse face.
  • Splice control: maximum splices per roll and splice marking for automated lines.
  • Cleanliness: freedom from loose fibre, contamination and visible defects across the web.

Converting, Coating and Line Integration

Jumbo rolls are designed to be unwound under tension into a coating or laminating line, then rewound and slit to finished tape widths. Stable winding tension and consistent basis weight are what keep coat weight uniform from the core to the outside of the roll.

Where the backing is combined with an adhesive system, we coordinate the pairing with our Medical Adhesive range and the corresponding release liner so that peel force, anchorage and unwind characteristics are balanced as one construction rather than three separate purchases.

Quality Control and Documentation

Our Suzhou factories operate under ISO 13485:2016 quality management, with most products CE certified and factory operations aligned to FDA requirements. Incoming substrate, in-process web inspection and outgoing roll inspection are handled by a dedicated quality team following written procedures.

For backing supply we retain samples and traceability records so that a delivered roll can be traced back to its substrate batch. Where a project requires it, we prepare the technical file and declaration documentation needed for the target market.

OEM and ODM Support

We work in OEM, ODM and full turnkey modes. A converter may take standard jumbo rolls and handle coating in-house; a brand may ask us to develop the full tape construction, including adhesive formulation, liner selection and finished slit rolls under its own label.

Our technical team supports material substitution studies, sample rolls for line trials and packaging design. Sampling typically runs 3–7 business days for a first sample, with 1–3 modification rounds depending on the substrate and formulation involved.

Information We Use to Configure Your Solution

A workable backing proposal depends on how the roll will be used, not only on the material name. The following inputs let us match substrate, dimensions and documentation to your line.

  • Finished tape type and clinical or industrial application.
  • Adhesive system and coat weight to be applied.
  • Required web width, roll diameter, core size and winding direction.
  • Target basis weight, thickness and tensile range.
  • Coating line speed and maximum tension the web will see.
  • Release liner to be paired on the reverse face.
  • Sterilization method, if the finished product is sterilized.
  • Target markets and the compliance documentation required.
  • Annual volume, first order quantity and packaging format.

Packaging, Delivery and Serviceability

Jumbo rolls are wound on cores, wrapped for moisture protection and packed on pallets sized for container loading. Roll orientation, pallet footprint and labelling are agreed at order confirmation so that goods arrive ready for the coating line without re-handling.

Spare cores, roll identification and batch documentation are supplied with each shipment. For repeat programmes we hold the agreed specification so that subsequent orders match the trial roll, which reduces re-qualification time on your line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which backing material should we choose for a breathable fixation tape?

Non-woven spunlace or spunbond is the usual answer. It accepts acrylic and hot-melt adhesives, transmits moisture vapour and conforms to curved surfaces. If the tape also needs to resist water, a PU film gives breathability with a waterproof barrier.

Can you supply backing and adhesive as one matched construction?

Yes. We supply backing, adhesive and release liner from the same programme, which lets us balance peel force, anchorage and unwind tension as a single specification instead of three independently sourced components.

What roll sizes are available for jumbo backing supply?

Web width, roll diameter, core inner diameter and winding direction are set per order. We confirm these against your coating or slitting equipment before production so the roll fits the unwind stand without adaptation.

Do you provide samples for line trials?

We provide sample rolls for coating and slitting trials. First samples typically take 3–7 business days, and 1–3 modification rounds are available depending on the substrate and any surface treatment required.

What quality documentation accompanies a backing order?

Orders are produced under ISO 13485:2016 procedures with batch traceability and retained samples. Technical files and declarations for CE or FDA-aligned markets are prepared where the project requires them.

Can backing be customized for an ODM tape programme?

Yes. We handle substrate selection, basis weight, surface treatment, roll dimensions and packaging as part of an ODM or turnkey programme, including finished slit rolls under your own brand.
